Breaking news: Just in LA Dodgers trade star pitcher to Red Sox

On Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers traded pitcher James Paxton to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league infielder Moises Bolivar.

Bolivar, a 17-year-old from Venezuela, played for the Dominican Summer League Red Sox, hitting .270 with three home runs and 19 RBIs. He signed a minor league contract with Boston in January, which included a $25,000 signing bonus. The MLB trade deadline is Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET.

Paxton, a native of Ladner, B.C., was designated for assignment on Monday, the day after he pitched against the Red Sox, securing a win. In that game, he allowed three runs on four hits over five innings, striking out seven and walking four. The 35-year-old left-hander had a record of 8-2 with a 4.43 ERA in 18 starts for the Dodgers this season.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora commented on the trade before Friday’s game against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, noting that they faced Paxton last week and saw an opportunity. “We know him. I think stuff-wise, throughout the season, I think the fastball has been down, but not last week. He ended up on a good note. The velocity was up,” Cora said.

Paxton, an 11-year veteran, has previously pitched for Seattle, the New York Yankees, Boston, and the Dodgers. He has a career record of 72-40 with a 3.76 ERA in 174 starts and has struck out 996 batters in 940 innings.

The Dodgers signed Paxton in January to a one-year contract worth $7 million, with the potential to earn up to $6 million more in bonuses.

Cora mentioned that the plan is for Paxton to join the rotation. To make space on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox moved right-handed pitcher Bryan Mata to the 60-day injured list.

“A guy with a proven track record on this team and in this division,” said Boston’s chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow, about Paxton. “Left-handed, checked a lot of boxes for us.

“We approached this trade deadline with the intention of adding starting pitching, which we felt was important for us. It’s great to get something done early, allowing us to continue exploring other opportunities to improve the team.”
