Charlton striker Alfie May: I’ll have my boots on for next tunnel jump at The Valley

Alfie May is eager for another opportunity to execute Charlton Athletic’s tunnel jump celebration, vowing to execute it with his football boots on next time.

The video of the League One’s leading goal scorer gained widespread attention after May slipped while attempting the customary celebration following a home victory at The Valley against Carlisle United.

“I’ve received quite a few messages about it, even now,” May shared with the South London Press. “It’s definitely going down in the history books – one of the most memorable tunnel jumps at Charlton! The moment I planted my foot, I knew I was in trouble.

“I had to ensure I landed safely – imagine having to go to the manager and explain that I got injured while attempting a celebration. I don’t think that conversation would have gone over too well.

“I went all out for it. I knew I’d be asked to do it, but my heels were hurting from my boots, which were relatively new. I took them off as soon as I came off the pitch.

“Tracey (Leaburn, head of first-team player care) told me to put my boots back on, but I refused. She insisted, but I said, ‘Thierry (Small), watch this – it’s easy.’ Apparently, he asked Tracey if falling on the floor was part of the routine.

“I’m pretty sure it’ll still be talked about when I retire.

“Next time, I’ll definitely do it in boots.”
