Breaking News: Los Angeles Angels are named as favorites to acquire two-time Cy Young winner

The New York Yankees are still seen as potential contenders to acquire Blake Snell, a two-time Cy Young winner. However, it seems increasingly likely that Snell prefers a team other than the Yankees. According to MLB insider Buster Olney speaking on the Willard and Dibs podcast, there’s speculation that the Los Angeles Angels might be the ones to ultimately sign Snell. Despite his impressive track record, Snell remains unsigned, though he’s regarded as one of the top pitchers in the free-agent market. Olney’s prediction is based on his discussions with people familiar with Snell, suggesting Snell favors staying in Southern California.

It’s notable that Snell, who won a Cy Young with the San Diego Padres in 2023, is still without a team. He joins a small group of pitchers who have won the award in both leagues. In 2023, Snell had an outstanding season with a 14-9 record and an MLB-leading 2.25 ERA, receiving nearly all first-place votes. This marked his second time leading the Majors in ERA, with his previous achievement coming in 2018 when he played for the Tampa Bay Rays and won the AL Cy Young. Despite reported interest from the Yankees, including considerations of a higher salary than what they’re paying Carlos Rodón, Snell remains unsigned.

Reports suggest that the Angels, among four other teams, are in contact with Snell but have not committed yet. Olney suggests that Snell’s decision could be influenced by the offered salary and potential injuries among other contenders, which might lead them to make competitive offers similar to what Snell’s agent, Scott Boras, is seeking. As Opening Day approaches, Snell remains without a team.
