Just In. Dallas Cowboys welcome another commitment ahead of draft deadline

The Dallas Cowboys considered bringing in an experienced wide receiver, welcoming Zay Jones for discussions in early May. However, Jones opted for a one-year contract worth $4.5 million with the Arizona Cardinals instead of joining the Cowboys. Now, the Cowboys are being touted as the top choice for Michael Thomas, a veteran free agent recently released by the New Orleans Saints due to a series of injury-ridden seasons.

The desire for seasoned wide receivers arises due to the lack of experience among the Cowboys’ roster beyond star receivers CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks. While Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Brooks are currently leading contenders to step into the WR3 position left open by Michael Gallup in the offseason, there’s also interest in another available veteran as a compelling alternative.

Renfrow, with six years of experience with the Las Vegas Raiders, faced a cap cut this offseason despite a standout performance in 2021. However, setbacks from injuries in 2022 and a lack of form in 2023 hindered his progress. A new beginning could rejuvenate Renfrow, who, at his peak, has demonstrated himself as a dependable slot receiver. Thus, CBS Sports’ proposal for the Cowboys to consider Renfrow appears logical, given his potential to thrive in their lineup.

In Renfrow’s breakout season, he amassed impressive stats, recording 103 catches on 128 targets for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. However, his performance dipped during the subsequent seasons, particularly due to injuries. In his first two years in the NFL, he caught 49 and 56 passes, respectively, with over 70 targets each year. During his injury-affected 2022 season, he saw 50 targets and made 36 catches, while in the last season, he was targeted only 37 times, resulting in 25 catches.

Despite these challenges, Renfrow maintains a solid career average of 10.7 yards per catch. Utilizing Renfrow in the slot would enable the Cowboys to capitalize on his ability to navigate the middle of the field effectively, freeing up CeeDee Lamb to play more on the outside, where he could exploit his speed and create additional opportunities downfield.
