JUST IN. DUKE complete another late signing.

Last season, Duke boasted a significantly deep backcourt, but the upcoming season presents a different picture with only Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster returning. Departures include Jeremy Roach, Jared McCain, Jaylen Blakes, and Jaden Schutt, all major contributors from the backcourt.

Consequently, Jon Scheyer and the Duke team are exploring options from the transfer portal to bolster their backcourt. While Sion James has received much attention, his commitment remains uncertain. However, another unexpected prospect has emerged with Riley Kugel, who initially committed to Kansas but has now reconsidered. Could he be a suitable addition?

Possibly. Kugel previously started as a combo guard for Florida but lost his starting role later in the season. Although his shooting performance was subpar, Duke’s upcoming roster is stacked with excellent shooters and scorers, potentially allowing him to thrive. While not primarily a point guard, his presence could provide insurance, especially with two point guards already in rotation. Given that either Foster or Proctor is likely to be on the court at any given time, Kugel may not frequently assume point guard duties, though he could manage if necessary.

While Kugel’s consideration of Duke hasn’t been confirmed, it presents an intriguing possibility. It feels akin to a second opportunity arising from the transfer portal, warranting attention as developments unfold.
