Upon joining the Bills, Diggs quickly demonstrated a strong rapport with the team’s quarterback, Josh Allen. He recorded impressive statistics with 127 receptions and 1,535 receiving yards, leading the league in both categories, along with eight touchdowns in his debut season in Buffalo. Diggs received his inaugural Pro Bowl selection and was named to the Associated Press’ All-Pro First Team, marking significant achievements in his career.

With Emmanuel Sanders joining the team in 2021, the Buffalo Bills boasted a formidable duo of speedy wide receivers that posed challenges for opposing defenses. Despite the added competition, Stefon Diggs continued to shine, concluding the season with 1,225 receiving yards and a career-best 10 touchdowns, earning his second consecutive Pro Bowl nod.

Heading into the 2022 offseason, Diggs secured a lucrative four-year, $96 million contract extension with the Bills, securing his presence with the team through the 2027 season. Despite the significant increase in his salary, Diggs maintained his high level of performance, amassing 1,429 yards and a career-high 11 touchdowns by the season’s end, securing his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection.

However, despite his individual success, tensions began to brew within the Bills’ locker room during the 2023 season. Despite Diggs’ impressive start with at least 100 receiving yards in the first five games, discord emerged as the team underwent changes in coaching staff, transitioning from OC Ken Dorsey to Joe Brady, coinciding with a drop in Diggs’ production.

Despite a solid performance in 2023, where he recorded 107 receptions for 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns, earning his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl selection, Stefon Diggs faced disappointment in the playoffs, dropping two crucial passes in the Buffalo Bills’ narrow 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, a familiar scenario for the team.

In a surprising move just four days into April, the Bills stunned the NFL world by trading Diggs to the Houston Texans in exchange for a second-round draft pick, signaling the end of what seemed to be a turbulent relationship between the franchise and their star wide receiver.

Hints of discord had been evident earlier, such as Diggs’ cryptic social media post in March stating he was “ready for whatever,” along with his absence from the start of mandatory minicamp the previous year. At the Pro Bowl Games in February, Diggs had also cast doubt on his future with the Bills, responding to inquiries about his optimism regarding his tenure with the franchise by saying, “I can’t tell you what the future holds, but I’m still being me.”

On Friday, the Buffalo Bills announced the signing of wide receiver Chase Claypool to a one-year contract, a move aimed at bolstering the team’s receiving corps following Stefon Diggs’ departure.

Claypool’s arrival provides much-needed depth at the receiver position for the Bills. Additionally, Buffalo addressed the wide receiver position during the 2024 NFL draft by selecting Florida State’s Keon Coleman with the No. 33 overall pick in the second round. Coleman possesses a unique skill set that could potentially fill the void left by Diggs as an elite No. 1 wideout.

While Claypool’s addition adds depth to a receiving group that lacked talent beyond promising rookie Coleman, it’s evident that the Bills are making efforts to provide quarterback Josh Allen with enough targets for the offense to thrive in 2024.

However, shortly after Claypool’s signing, the Bills made a controversial move by immediately assigning his number 14 jersey, previously worn by Stefon Diggs, potentially disrespecting Diggs’ tenure with the team.
