Vikings Named Potential Landing Spot for Dolphins All-Pro, 10-INT CB

The Miami Dolphins released Xavien Howard during this offseason, using a post-June 1 release designation. Howard, who had an impressive 10 interceptions in 2020, boasts four Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro nods. Despite his credentials, David Kenyon of Bleacher Report suggests the Minnesota Vikings as a potential destination for the 30-year-old, highlighting the Dolphins’ need to alleviate their hefty cap burden.

In his April 28 article, Kenyon points out that the Dolphins, facing financial constraints, had to part ways with key defensive players, with Howard being among them. By designating him as a post-June 1 release, the Dolphins managed to save $18.5 million in cap space for the year. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Howard received full clearance for football activities just before the draft, indicating his readiness to engage with interested teams, such as the Minnesota Vikings, where former Miami head coach Brian Flores now serves as the defensive coordinator.

Despite Howard’s impressive past performances, his recent seasons have been marred by injuries, limiting his appearances and interception tally to just one in each of the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Brian Flores, currently the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, served as Xavien Howard’s head coach during the 2019-2021 seasons with the Miami Dolphins. This established relationship brings a sense of familiarity for Howard, potentially making the Vikings an attractive destination for him.

Howard’s most outstanding seasons coincided with Flores’ tenure, notably recording 10 interceptions in 2020 and five in 2021. Howard expressed his admiration for Flores during an interview on “The OGs” podcast on March 19, acknowledging him as a “player’s coach” despite any differences they may have had. He credited Flores with instilling a high standard within the team, drawing from his experiences with the New England Patriots and their pursuit of greatness. While they may not have been particularly close, Howard emphasized his respect for Flores and the impact he had during their time together in Miami.
