Chiefs draft fastest player at NFL Combine, add another weapon

The Kansas City Chiefs have won consecutive Super Bowls despite having a less impressive group of wide receivers, but that changed in the recent NFL Draft led by Andy Reid and his team. When the Denver Broncos next face off against the Chiefs, their defense under Vance Joseph will face an even greater challenge.

Patrick Mahomes remains the centerpiece, but the NFL draft gifted Kansas City with a new speedy offensive weapon in Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, selected with the 28th pick after a trade with the Buffalo Bills. Worthy, who set a combine record with a 4.21-second 40-yard dash, will join Marquise “Hollywood” Brown in the receiving corps, providing Mahomes with multiple options alongside veteran talent like Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice.

The Chiefs’ transformation from having limited offensive weapons around Mahomes to possessing a formidable group has been significant since the departure of Tyreek Hill. Worthy’s college performance at Texas, where he caught 75 passes for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns last season, surpasses Hill’s college statistics. This shift is especially significant for the Broncos, who are aiming to end their long playoff drought and face a tough path through Kansas City, winners of the AFC West for eight consecutive seasons. Broncos defensive coordinator Joseph faces a strategic decision on how to deploy Pro Bowl cornerback Pat Surtain II against Kansas City’s revamped offense in the upcoming season.
