Huge Boost For UNC Basketball As They Are Set to Host Younger Brother of Former ACC Star Amid Potential Signing

Ever since Hubert Davis assumed leadership of the UNC basketball program following Roy Williams’ retirement in 2021, he has demonstrated a proactive approach to recruiting from the transfer portal.

This trend continues into the current offseason, as Davis and the UNC coaching staff are actively engaging with potential transfers to bolster next season’s roster in Chapel Hill. One notable target in their sights is Cade Tyson, who entered the transfer portal almost three weeks ago on March 25 after his stint at Belmont. Tyson has garnered significant interest from various high-major programs, including UNC. Following the conclusion of UNC’s season in the Sweet 16, they wasted no time reaching out to Tyson.

This initial contact has sparked mutual interest, with reports from 247Sports’ Travis Branham suggesting that UNC is arranging an official visit for Tyson next weekend. This visit will be Tyson’s second official one, as he is currently scheduled to visit Tennessee this weekend.

Tyson’s interest in both schools is understandable given his connections to them. He hails from Monroe, N.C., just a short drive from UNC’s campus, and he spent his first two collegiate seasons at Belmont, which is also relatively close to Tennessee’s campus.

UNC basketball has a prior connection to Tyson through his older brother, Hunter, who competed for ACC rival Clemson from 2018 to 2023.

Currently ranked as the No. 25 transfer on 247Sports’ transfer portal rankings, Tyson showcased his skills by averaging 16.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.6 assists across 31 games last season. Standing at 6-foot-7, he played nearly 32 minutes per game while boasting an impressive 46.5 percent shooting accuracy from beyond the arc.

Given Tyson’s combination of length and sharpshooting abilities, his addition to the Tar Heel roster for the upcoming season would be greatly valued. However, whether UNC basketball can secure his commitment during next weekend’s visit remains uncertain.
