Huge boost for Canadiens as they sign another star to entry-level contract

The Montreal Canadiens have secured defenseman Lane Hutson, a promising defensive prospect, by signing him to a three-year entry-level contract. Hutson wasted no time in transitioning to the professional level, making the decision less than a day after his college season ended with a tough overtime loss to Denver University in the Frozen Four semi-finals. Despite being chosen by Montreal in the second round of the 2022 Draft (62nd overall), Hutson’s swift rise has silenced doubts about his size and positioned him as a future star on the Canadiens’ blue line.

Expected to become the third member of the 2022 draft class to debut for the Canadiens, following Juraj Slafkovsky and Owen Beck, Hutson’s journey has been marked by remarkable achievements. Notably, he was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award in 2023 and made the top 10 finalist list in 2024. His NCAA career at Boston University was highlighted by consistent dominance, culminating in a standout performance in the 2024 World Juniors where he clinched a gold medal with Team USA.

Hutson’s defensive prowess has notably improved, characterized by calculated risk-taking and swift recovery aided by his mobility. While possessing an impressive array of skills, it’s his reliability in executing fundamental plays that distinguishes him. Often likened to Quinn Hughes for his offensive capabilities, Hutson excels as a power play asset, utilizing his exceptional footwork to create scoring opportunities. His deceptive shot, although not particularly swift, keeps goalies guessing due to its unpredictable trajectory.

With only three games remaining in the regular season, Hutson, at just 20 years old, is poised to make his NHL debut with the Canadiens, potentially in his home state of Michigan against the Detroit Red Wings. While this early debut will cost him the first year of his contract, Hutson’s talent and potential promise an exciting addition to Montreal’s roster.
