Huge boost for Auburn as they reportedly confirm the signing of another top super star

JP Pegues, who previously played as a guard for Furman and was named to the All-Southern Conference first team, revealed in a social media update on Friday that he has chosen to commit to Auburn.

“I chose Auburn because of their conviction and the vivid vision that they had for me,” Pegues told On3′s Joe Tipton of his decision. “I also love how they operate in a family oriented environment which was a big priority for me. Lastly Auburn is a winning program and one of the best defenses in the country.”

Auburn had been actively seeking a dynamic point guard through the transfer portal. Head coach Bruce Pearl often praised the facilitating abilities and efficient assist-to-turnover ratios of his current point guards, Tre Donaldson and Aden Holloway, but expressed a desire for more consistent scoring.

JP Pegues' March Madness moment no surprise to his high school coach

Pegues emerged as a prime target for Auburn due to his impressive scoring record, averaging 18.4 points per game and sinking 83 3-pointers with a 36% accuracy from beyond the arc during the 2023-24 season. Additionally, Pegues demonstrated strong playmaking skills with an average of 4.8 assists per game.

Auburn had a chance to assess Pegues firsthand earlier in the season during a closed-door scrimmage against Furman. They were likely familiar with Pegues’ standout moment, where he sank a game-winning 3-pointer just before the buzzer, propelling 13th-seeded Furman to victory over 4th-seeded Virginia in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
