Exclusive: Newcastle now want to sign Palace star after unexpected twist

Newcastle United is reportedly strategizing to make a move for Crystal Palace’s center-back Marc Guehi during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to sources cited by Football Insider. The unexpected injury crisis, with Sven Botman undergoing anterior cruciate ligament surgery last month followed by Jamaal Lascelles sustaining a similar injury during Saturday’s match against West Ham, has left Newcastle severely depleted in defense. Consequently, the club is now aiming to bolster their defensive options with new signings in the summer.

Newcastle plot Guehi deal despite big-money Crystal Palace demands

Guehi has emerged as a primary target for Newcastle United, impressed by his performances for Crystal Palace following his transfer from Chelsea in 2021. It’s understood that Palace will likely demand a substantial fee for the England international. However, Newcastle is contemplating a defensive overhaul and may be willing to authorize a significant financial transaction to secure his services.

Guehi, who has represented his country nine times, has featured in 26 matches across various competitions during the 2023-24 season, starting in 24 of those games. Unfortunately, he sustained a knee injury in February, which may keep him out of action until the end of April. However, he is expected to regain fitness in time for the European Championships in Germany this summer.

Guehi’s contract with Crystal Palace, which has remained unchanged since his arrival at the club, is due to expire in June 2026. He is currently just five games away from reaching the significant milestone of 100 Premier League appearances during his tenure with the Eagles.
