Huge blow for Longhorns as another Longhorn enters the NCAA transfer portal

According to reports from multiple sources, including Joe Tipton of On3, it has been stated that Chris Johnson, a freshman guard for the Texas Longhorns, will be entering the NCAA transfer portal. This information was further validated by Johnson’s agent, who confirmed the news to 247Sports.

Johnson officially entered the portal on Tuesday evening.

Originally hailing from Missouri City, standing at 6’5″ and weighing 180 pounds, Chris Johnson was a highly-regarded prospect, being rated as a consensus four-star recruit and ranked 53rd nationally along with being the 11th best combo guard according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Initially committing to Kansas in August 2022 and subsequently signing with the Jayhawks, Johnson later reversed his decision and decommitted in June of the following year.

In a statement shared on Twitter, Johnson expressed his internal struggles with his initial decision, leading him to conclude that it wasn’t the right fit for him. Despite recognizing the challenging timing of his choice, he believed it was in the best interest of both himself and Kansas to part ways.

Texas Longhorns G Chris Johnson Enters Transfer Portal

Just over three weeks after his decommitment from Kansas, Johnson filled a gap in the 2023 recruiting class for Texas by signing an athletic scholarship agreement. This move addressed the absence left by Ron Holland and AJ Johnson, both highly touted five-star prospects who opted for professional careers instead of joining the Longhorns.

However, Johnson’s time on the court for Texas during the 2023-24 season was limited, with an average of 4.5 minutes per game across 17 appearances. He scored a total of 18 points, shooting 8-of-19 from the field, including 2-of-7 from three-point range. A setback occurred when he sustained an ankle injury during an exhibition game against St. Edward’s, causing him to miss the season opener against Incarnate Word. He did make a return for the win over Delaware State, where he recorded a season-high 15 minutes of play and scored five points. Throughout conference play, however, Johnson’s playing time was minimal, totaling only 12 minutes across seven games and scoring two points while also committing two turnovers.

Additionally, Texas saw sophomore forward Alex Anamekwe and redshirt sophomore guard Gavin Perryman enter the transfer portal since its opening the previous month.
