Breaking: Los Angeles Chargers GM reveals draft priority, “A position you never stop chasing”

Recently, Joe Hortiz, the general manager of the Los Angeles Chargers, shared some insights with the media regarding his approach to bolstering cornerback depth. Despite the team’s acquisition of Kristian Fulton in free agency, Hortiz emphasized that they are not done enhancing the position group.

“We’re continuously in search of cornerbacks,” stated Hortiz, underscoring, “We’ll acquire corners through signings, drafts, and we’ll always be scouting for talent in that area. It’s a position where the pursuit never ceases.” Despite the addition of Fulton, the Chargers’ depth at cornerback remains limited. Asante Samuel led returning defenders in snaps played, along with Ja’sir Taylor (46% of defensive snaps) and Deane Leonard (19%). Departures include Michael Davis (77%) and Essang Bassey (19%).

Nevertheless, Hortiz acknowledges the potential of the current roster players.

How Joe Hortiz's 'Outstanding' Reputation Will Benefit the Chargers Front Office

“It’s an important position and I feel good about the guys that are here. I think Asante is good pro. He’s been in a starting role. I feel good about Ja’Sir and Deane, I think they’re going to take steps this year.

“And what I do feel great about are our coaches. They’re going to do a great job of developing our young guys.”

Cornerback Plan Moving Forward

The acquisition of Fulton helps mitigate the urgent need to address the cornerback position in the upcoming draft. However, this philosophy also indicates that the team is monitoring the remaining free agent pool. Notably, there are still several top-tier options available, including Xavien Howard, Adoree Jackson, and Stephon Gilmore. Additionally, there are solid budget-friendly choices such as Rock Ya-Sin, Levi Wallace, and Ahkello Witherspoon.

With the Los Angeles Chargers boasting over $30 million in cap space, it wouldn’t be unexpected for them to pursue a cornerback signing post-draft.
