The Buffalo Bills managed to keep their interest in Casey Toohill under wraps until after he had already signed with the team. On Tuesday, the Bills officially announced the signing of the pass-rusher to a contract.

At 27 years old, Toohill comes to Buffalo after spending four years with the Washington Commanders. Here’s a breakdown of what you should know about the Bills’ new addition to their pass-rushing unit. Last season, Toohill saw a significant increase in playing time, logging a career-high of 495 defensive snaps (45%) with Washington. During his time on the field, he managed to tally five sacks and seven quarterback hits. This marked a substantial improvement compared to his previous performance, as he had only secured two quarterback sacks prior to the 2023 season.

In addition to his pass-rushing abilities, Toohill also proves to be a dependable asset against the run, particularly as a rotational player in the lineup.

Coming off of a career-year

Casey Toohill became a free agent this year after experiencing his most successful season as a professional player. He saw a significant increase in playing time, participating in a career-high 495 defensive snaps (45%) with Washington last season. During his time on the field, Toohill achieved five sacks and seven quarterback hits. This marked a considerable improvement from his previous performance, as he had only managed to secure two quarterback sacks before the 2023 season. In addition to his effectiveness as a pass rusher, Toohill also demonstrates reliability in defending against the run, particularly when utilized as a rotational player.

Saw an uptick in snaps after Chase Young trade

Toohill became increasingly involved on the field during the latter part of the season. Following the trade of Chase Young on November 1st, Toohill saw significant playing time, participating in 66 percent of the snaps or more over the subsequent seven weeks. Although he had already secured four sacks with limited reps before the Young trade, he capitalized on the increased opportunities late in the season, gaining valuable playing experience.

Athleticism off the charts

Toohill showcased exceptional athleticism heading into the draft, registering outstanding scores in various athletic metrics. His Relative Athletic Score was notably high, and among EDGE rushers, he ranked first in terms of athleticism grade during the combine evaluations.
