Packers Land ‘Best Pure Edge Rusher’ in Mel Kiper’s Latest Mock Draft

The Green Bay Packers may seek to enhance their defensive lineup by targeting defensive prospects in the initial round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Positioned in the latter part of the draft’s first round, the Packers stand out as one of the few teams with the potential to utilize their initial pick to fortify their defensive unit.

In recent years, Green Bay has strategically invested draft resources in bolstering their offensive arsenal, yielding significant returns, particularly in the preceding season. Nevertheless, the time has come for the Packers to infuse youthful talent into their defense across all positional tiers, as they aim to remain competitive within the NFC North division.

Laiatu Latu 2024 Draft Profile - Defiant Takes Football

In the previous draft, the Packers opted to reinforce their defensive line by selecting Lukas Van Ness with the 13th overall pick. Although Van Ness’s role wasn’t extensive last season, he still managed to contribute significantly, amassing 32 combined tackles, 10 quarterback hits, eight tackles for loss, and four sacks.

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. recently disclosed the third iteration of his 2024 NFL mock draft, unveiling some unexpected selections. In Kiper’s projection for the Packers, he envisions them securing Laiatu Latu, a former UCLA outside linebacker/EDGE rusher. Despite typically being projected in the 20s by various mock drafts, Latu is regarded as one of the premier pass rushers in the draft class. Kiper argues that while some anticipate Green Bay might opt for an offensive tackle with the 24th overall pick, the allure of Latu’s exceptional edge rushing abilities might be too enticing to overlook. Latu capped off a remarkable final season at UCLA, tallying 49 combined tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, and two interceptions.

Despite a medical retirement in 2021 due to a neck injury during his time at the University of Washington, Latu showcased impressive performances during his two seasons at UCLA, registering 111 quarterback pressures and 23.5 sacks. If concerns regarding Latu’s medical history are assuaged, he could seamlessly transition into NFL action, potentially making an immediate impact as a rookie.

As the upcoming season approaches, Green Bay currently relies on Rashan Gary and Preston Smith on the edge. While Smith delivered another productive season in 2023, he is 31 years old, necessitating the Packers to contemplate succession planning for the future.
