Among them is Austin Ekeler, a former fan favorite who has now joined the Washington Commanders on a two-year contract to reunite with Anthony Lynn.

Ekeler, who experienced a downturn in performance last season, had long been expected to depart from the Chargers. Despite talks of contract extensions and trades falling through, it was evident that his time with the team was coming to an end. The Chargers showed little interest in retaining Ekeler, swiftly making moves such as signing Gus Edwards at the start of the offseason.

In Washington, Ekeler aims to rejuvenate his career and dispel notions of declining due to age. Despite a standout performance as a fantasy football running back a few years ago, the rigors of the NFL often lead to rapid aging for players in that position, leaving many to believe Ekeler has passed his prime.

However, Ekeler himself disputes this narrative. In a recent media appearance following his signing with Washington, he attributed his struggles in the previous season to an early ankle injury and the Chargers’ failure to adopt an offensive strategy that maximized his strengths, rather than any inherent decline in his abilities.

Austin Ekeler blames Chargers’ offense for 2023 regression

Undoubtedly, the Chargers’ offensive playcalling had an impact on their running game last season. Hiring Kellen Moore was supposed to revitalize their offense by integrating the run and pass game, aiming to transform one of the weakest rushing offenses into a formidable one.

However, Moore, although effective in certain aspects during his time in Los Angeles, couldn’t fully compensate for the losses of key players like Corey Linsley and Mike Williams early in the season. Despite Justin Herbert’s presence, the offense struggled more than expected.

Considering Ekeler’s performance last season, it’s evident he wasn’t as explosive as before. While his ankle injury may have played a part, there’s a prevailing belief that his overall trajectory is declining.

A change of scenery might offer Ekeler a fresh start, but it’s unlikely he’ll reach the same heights as he did in previous seasons.
