Coventry City owner reveals special request he made after booking FA Cup semi-final place

Coventry City owner Doug King requested manager Mark Robins to orchestrate a successful FA Cup campaign. And what followed was remarkable.

Just 14 months into his ownership of the Sky Blues, King found himself outside the visitors’ dressing room, exuberantly pumping his fists in the air. This exhilarating moment came after Coventry staged an incredible comeback in stoppage time, reminiscent of the club’s historic ’87 victory, securing their spot at Wembley.

King, known for his success in the rapeseed oil business, was still catching his breath as he congratulated Robins and the team. Reflecting on the journey, he expressed disappointment over last year’s loss to Wrexham, emphasizing the need for a stronger performance. Thus, he urged Robins to focus on reviving the magic of the FA Cup, aiming for a memorable run.

Despite facing their biggest challenge yet, King praised the team’s resilience and tactical prowess. He acknowledged the significance of reaching the semi-finals, especially considering the club’s past struggles.

What delighted King most was the manner of the victory. He emphasized the importance of playing well and being competitive, rather than relying on luck or defensive tactics. The thrilling match against Wolves showcased Coventry’s determination and spirit, leaving everyone stunned, including King and his companions in the directors’ box.

As a passionate supporter of the Sky Blues, King reveled in the victory, even planning to paint his house sky blue to celebrate the achievement.

King’s investment in January last year came close to yielding immediate rewards. If not for the defeat in the penalty shoot-out at Wembley, he would have steered the club back to the top-flight for the first time since 2001.

When asked about the potential positive repercussions of this near miss, he responded, “Absolutely. From my perspective, it felt like a missed opportunity. We entered the top six late in the season, and although we finished fifth, we were only there for a mere 15 days throughout the entire season.”

“We put on a strong performance against Middlesbrough, but in a final, anything can happen. We weren’t up against one of the clubs benefiting from parachute payments, yet victory slipped away in the most heartbreaking manner.”

“However, as I’ve always believed, you have to persistently knock on the door before it opens. We’re currently in eighth place, striving to regain entry. If we continue to do things right and maintain professionalism, hopefully, we’ll seize that crucial moment and break through.”

“But for the moment, we’ll accept this outcome. I mean, wow – that’s football for you. The setback we experienced with Wolves scoring twice felt like a gut punch.

“But witnessing what unfolded afterward… Well, I believe that memory will linger with us for a considerable time.”
