Report: Yankees make new offer for White Sox star

According to a report from USA Today on Tuesday, the New York Yankees, feeling suddenly uneasy about their pitching roster, have put forward a new proposal to the Chicago White Sox concerning their star pitcher Dylan Cease.

Chris Getz, the newly appointed general manager of the Chicago team, is open to trading Cease, but only if the deal meets a certain high price, which some teams have deemed excessive. Getz is particularly keen on acquiring outfield prospect Spencer Jones from the Yankees, but the latest offer does not include Jones, as per the USA Today report.

On Monday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned that Gerrit Cole, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, was scheduled for an MRI on his pitching elbow due to a longer-than-usual recovery time for this part of the season.

As of now, the results of Cole’s medical tests have not been made public by the Yankees.

While pitchers like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery are still on the market as free agents, Dylan Cease presents a more economically viable option for the Yankees, especially since he’s currently in spring training with the White Sox.

Cease inked a one-year, $8 million deal in January, bypassing arbitration, and has one more arbitration-eligible season before hitting unrestricted free agency in 2026.

Since his debut with the White Sox in 2019, Cease has amassed a 43-35 record, with a 3.83 ERA and 792 strikeouts across 658 innings pitched in 123 games, all as a starter.

This spring, Cease has already started two games, pitching a total of five innings. In that time, he’s allowed just one run, a solo home run, while recording six strikeouts.

Spencer Jones, aged 22, is highly regarded, ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Yankees’ farm system by MLB.com. In 2023, split between high-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset, Jones posted impressive numbers, batting .267 with 16 home runs, 66 RBIs, and 43 RBIs in 117 games.
