Breaking News: Lions sign another top star in a deal worth $925 million

The Detroit Lions made a significant move by acquiring Carlton Davis from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday, but they were also eyeing another experienced cornerback. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Lions have reached an agreement on a two-year contract worth $925 million with cornerback Amik Robertson.

Pelissero reported that Robertson’s deal includes incentives that could push the total value up to $10.75 million, with $4.5 million guaranteed, as confirmed by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Additionally, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press revealed that Robertson will receive a $3.3 million signing bonus. Robertson, originally a fourth-round pick by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020, saw his role grow significantly in his last two seasons with the team, totaling 19 starts and over 670 defensive snaps.

NFL rumors: Lions agree to sign free agent CB Amik Robertson

In the 2023 season, Robertson played in all 17 games, starting in 12, and recorded 50 tackles, two interceptions, six pass breakups, and a forced fumble. He maintained perfect attendance for the Raiders over the past two seasons. According to Pro Football Focus, Robertson allowed 40 catches on 64 targets for 445 yards and three touchdowns, with two interceptions and an 85.7 passer rating allowed in coverage last season.

Despite being undersized at 5-foot-9 and 183 pounds, Robertson offers versatility to play both inside and outside, although he primarily lined up on the outside with the Raiders and performed well in that role.

Amik Robertson seems to fit what Lions want in a cornerback

Despite his smaller stature, Amik Robertson has earned praise for his confidence and physicality on the field. Raiders’ interim head coach Antonio Pierce highlighted Robertson’s talent in contesting passes and his willingness to make aggressive tackles, noting his fearless demeanor and smart play. Robertson’s versatility allows him to excel both on the outside and in the slot, and despite occasional setbacks, he demonstrates solid tackling skills. This aspect of his game aligns with the emphasis placed on tackling by both Brad Holmes, the Lions’ general manager, and Deshea Townsend, the team’s new defensive backs coach.

While acquiring a prominent cornerback was an obvious priority for the Lions, it’s equally important to enhance their depth at the position. Amik Robertson represents a significant improvement over many of their previous options, addressing a glaring need on the roster. Chris Burke of The Athletic pointed out that defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn might see similarities between Robertson’s style of play and his own during his playing days, indicating a potential personal connection and appreciation for Robertson’s skill set.
