The Oakland Athletics have unveiled plans for their new 33,000-seat stadium located on the Las Vegas Strip, featuring a massive five-tier roof reminiscent of baseball pennants. The design, created by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and HNTB, has drawn comparisons to both the Sydney Opera House and the scales of an armadillo.

Set to occupy nine acres of the Tropicana casino site, the stadium will offer sweeping views of the Las Vegas skyline and promises an unparalleled fan experience, according to A’s owner John Fisher. Scheduled to open in 2028 following approval by Major League Baseball owners, the venue boasts the world’s largest cable-net glass window in the outfield and an 18,000-square-foot jumbotron, making it a technological marvel.

With up to 2,500 parking spots and a sizable plaza surrounding the stadium, the focal point remains its striking roof design. Fisher welcomes comparisons to both the Sydney Opera House and the armadillo, considering them compliments indicative of the stadium’s unique character and endurance.

Designed to shield spectators from the intense desert sun while permitting natural light, the overlapping layers of the roof create a dynamic architectural spectacle. Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG, describes the design as a nod to the local climate, blending seamlessly with the vibrant atmosphere of the Las Vegas Strip.

Although BIG had previously proposed a design for a new ballpark in Oakland, the decision to relocate the A’s to Las Vegas has stirred controversy among fans. Nonetheless, the team will join the ranks of the city’s other major sports franchises, including the NHL’s Golden Knights, the WNBA’s Aces, and the NFL’s Raiders.
