According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Eric Lauer, a former pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, is set to join the Pittsburgh Pirates. The deal, reported on Thursday, is a minor-league agreement.
Lauer, 28, spent the past four seasons with the Brewers. Despite a successful 2022 season with 11 wins and 157 strikeouts, his performance took a downturn in 2023. He struggled with a 6.56 ERA over ten appearances, partly due to a right shoulder injury that sidelined him for a significant portion of the season.
Joining the Pirates, Lauer presents a low-risk option for their predominantly right-handed rotation, which has seen other notable free-agent acquisitions. Meanwhile, for the Brewers, Lauer’s departure adds to the significant turnover from last year’s pitching staff, including the exits of Corbin Burnes, Adrian Houser, and Julio Teheran.
