Breaking news: Detroit Lions confirm another vital signing

The Detroit Lions are extending the contract of 22-year-old running back Zonovan Knight before free agency begins. Knight adds youthful talent to the team’s running back roster, which already boasts David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, a formidable duo from the previous season. With limited opportunities behind Montgomery and Gibbs, the Lions are comfortable bypassing the crowded free-agent market. Despite a shoulder injury cutting his debut season short after just two games, Knight secures a new deal before free agency opens next week.

Having shown promise during his rookie year with the New York Jets in 2022, Knight rushed 85 times for 300 yards and a touchdown in seven games. However, he found himself without a spot in New York’s lineup after they acquired Dalvin Cook and welcomed back Breece Hall from injury.

The Lions’ front office, led by Brad Holmes, faces decisions regarding the depth of their running back rotation. Mohamed Ibrahim and fullback Jason Cabinda are still without contracts, while Craig Reynolds is an exclusive-rights-free agent. Ibrahim’s season ended prematurely due to injury after joining the Lions as an undrafted free agent, while Cabinda has transitioned effectively from linebacker to fullback, despite injury setbacks. Reynolds has played a rotational role for Detroit in recent seasons, earning trust even though he didn’t see many touches last season, and contributing a touchdown in the playoffs.

Although the Lions have no pressing need at running back, Knight’s addition provides intriguing depth considering his age and promising performance during his limited time with the Jets. Knight, a former three-year starter at North Carolina State, amassed impressive college stats with 2,286 rushing yards, 18 touchdowns, and 48 receptions for 337 yards.
