Breaking News: Cubs are named favorites to trade for New York Mets star

A proposed trade could see the Chicago Cubs acquiring one of baseball’s premier hitters from the New York Mets. Speculation has circulated throughout the offseason regarding the Cubs’ interest in acquiring a power hitter from the Mets.

With the Cubs making minimal offensive upgrades during the winter, they may explore mid-season trades to bolster their lineup. One potential target for Chicago is Mets standout Pete Alonso, who has been linked to the Cubs in earlier rumors. Alonso’s knack for hitting over 40 home runs per season could significantly aid the Cubs’ playoff aspirations in 2024.

Furthermore, Alonso’s impending free agency and the Mets’ uncertain competitiveness in the National League create a favorable opportunity for a trade. The proposed deal by Joey Mistretta suggests the Cubs would acquire Alonso in exchange for Cade Horton, Michael Busch, and Jordan Wicks.

While Alonso’s addition would greatly enhance Chicago’s lineup, it’s contingent on his willingness to sign a contract extension post-trade. Sacrificing three of their top prospects for a first baseman on an expiring contract might not align with the Cubs’ long-term strategy, especially considering Alonso’s potential availability in free agency the following season.

Ultimately, while Alonso could address the Cubs’ offensive needs, prudence suggests avoiding overpayment, particularly when they could pursue him in free agency without surrendering valuable prospects.
