Former eight-time MLB All-Star signs with Mexican League team

The Mexican League’s Diablos Rojos have announced the signing of Robinson Cano, according to ESPN’s Enrique Rojas. Cano, now 41 years old, has had a distinguished career in Major League Baseball, marred by a couple of suspensions for using performance-enhancing drugs. Beginning with success at the Yankees, he secured a hefty 10-year, $240M deal with the Mariners in 2014, one of the largest contracts in MLB history at the time.

How does Robinson Cano fit with 2022 Mets?

Despite performing well with the Mariners, he faced an 80-game suspension in 2018 for testing positive for furosemide. He later joined the Mets but encountered another suspension in 2020 due to a positive test for Stanozolol, resulting in a 162-game ban.

After bouncing between teams and experiencing a decline in performance, Cano became a free agent in 2022. Despite his desire to continue playing, his age, suspensions, and declining stats led to no club signing him, despite the option to do so for the league minimum with the Mets covering the remaining contract. Cano has remained active, playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic and participating in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Now, he is set to join the Diablos Rojos for the 2024 season.

Cano’s MLB career includes 2,267 games, 2,639 hits, and 335 home runs, along with various accolades such as World Series victory, All-Star selections, Silver Slugger awards, and Gold Gloves. However, his legacy will always be clouded by his connections to PEDs, leading to ongoing debates about the legitimacy of his achievements.
