Rangers heavily scouting trade targets on Senators and two other NHL teams

During the past week, the New York Rangers have deployed numerous scouts to observe teams expected to sell players. In addition to focusing on the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks, who have potential trade assets Anthony Duclair and Frank Vatrano, respectively, they are also keeping an eye on players from the Nashville Predators, Ottawa Senators, and Arizona Coyotes.

In fact, during their 5-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Feb. 22, both the Predators and Senators had representatives present. With just over a week left until the NHL Trade Deadline on Mar. 8th, here are the players the Rangers might be considering acquiring.

Scouting the Ottawa Senators

Senators' Tarasenko will miss game vs. Stars due to personal matter

When considering the Ottawa Senators, their primary focus appears to be on reuniting with top-six winger Vladimir Tarasenko. The 32-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) this summer, and there are indications that the Senators may soon approach him to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate a deal. It’s likely that New York will seek for the Senators to retain a portion of his $5 million cap hit to enable them to pursue one or two additional depth players. This season, Tarasenko has tallied 15 goals and 38 points in 55 games.

Another potential acquisition target for the Rangers could be another pending UFA forward, Dominik Kubalik.

Scouting the Nashville Predators

A player who’s gaining increasing attention is center Thomas Novak. At 26 years old, Novak offers great value with a salary of $800,000 and will become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) in July. This season, he’s contributed 12 goals and 32 points in 49 games. However, his performance in the face-off circle could benefit from some improvement, currently standing at 44.6%.

Another player linked to the Rangers is rugged defenseman Jeremy Lauzon. Unlike Novak, Lauzon, also 26, has two more years remaining on his contract. His acquisition would likely displace Erik Gustafsson from the lineup. If Lauzon is the target, it’s possible that young defenseman Zac Jones could be included in the deal, as Lauzon would essentially block Jones’s path to a starting role.

Scouting the Arizona Coyotes

At this time of year, perennial trade deadline sellers are always on the radar of every contender. However, predicting the New York Rangers’ specific targets is a bit challenging. The most plausible option seems to be winger Jason Zucker, who joined the Coyotes on a one-year deal, much like Tarasenko, with the intention of being traded at the deadline. Zucker, 32, has produced moderately well with 23 points (8 goals, 15 assists) in 48 games. New York would likely negotiate for the Coyotes to retain a portion of his $5.3 million cap hit.

But here’s a twist. Defenseman Matt Dumba is also set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and would significantly bolster the Rangers’ defense for a Cup run. At 29 years old, Dumba carries a $3.9 million cap hit, which the Rangers could potentially accommodate.

The advice from 1994 Stanley Cup-winning GM Neil Smith, shared on the Forever Blueshirts Show, offers a valuable perspective for current Rangers GM Chris Drury. Smith emphasized the importance of maintaining team chemistry when making significant roster moves. It’s a reminder for Drury to proceed with caution and thoughtful consideration as he navigates the trade deadline and potential acquisitions for the Rangers.
