Former All-Star Braves pitcher Signs with Orioles

Julio Teherán played for the Atlanta Braves for nine seasons before embarking on a journey that led him to potentially join his fourth team in five years. The Baltimore Orioles, an American League franchise, have extended an opportunity to Teherán for the 2024 season by signing him to a minor league contract and inviting him to Spring Training.

Following a couple of lackluster years following his departure from Atlanta, Julio Teherán faced a hiatus from major league baseball in 2022, leading many to speculate about the end of his career. However, the Milwaukee Brewers offered him a lifeline last year, and Teherán seized the opportunity during his 11 starts with the Brewers.

He delivered a solid performance, recording a 4.40 ERA, 4.67 xFIP, and 0.3 fWAR according to Fangraphs, across 71.2 innings last season. Notably, he had contrasting outings against his former team, the Braves, in late July. His first start was remarkable, pitching six innings with just three hits allowed. However, the second start, held at Truist Park, didn’t unfold as favorably for Teherán. He lasted five innings but conceded nine earned runs, eleven hits, and three home runs.

While these statistics might not stand out, they are respectable for pitchers filling organizational depth roles or occupying the fifth spot in the rotation. Now, the once highly-touted Braves prospect is aiming to secure a place in the backend of the Orioles’ rotation for the 2024 season.

Baltimore’s decision to sign Teherán comes at a crucial time, especially with the setback of one of their key pitchers, Kyle Bradish, beginning the season on the injured list due to a sprained UCL. If Teherán successfully secures a roster spot during Spring Training, he stands to earn a $2 million salary.

Throughout his career, Teherán has established himself with solid performance metrics. Holding an 81-82 record, a 3.83 ERA, a 4.37 FIP, and accumulating a 13.2 fWAR, he brings a wealth of experience and consistency to the table. With his move to Baltimore in 2024, Teherán aims to further bolster these numbers and contribute effectively to the team’s success.
