Angels, Giants More Likely To Sign Yankees Superstar Target

The New York Yankees might not succeed in acquiring another top-tier player before the start of the 2024 season. Despite frequent speculation connecting them to Blake Snell, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, the likelihood of a deal seems low due to significant tax implications. Nevertheless, rumors persist, with reports frequently linking the Yankees to Snell, although the chances of a move appear slim. While New York remains a potential destination, the Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants are reportedly viewed as more probable landing spots for Snell. According to NJ.com’s Bob Klapisch, Yankees’ owner Steinbrenner is unwilling to accept the hefty luxury tax surcharge, which would require paying Snell over $60 million in 2024. Steinbrenner has consistently declined such proposals, reiterating his stance to Snell’s agent, Scott Boras.

The Angels and Giants appear to be more probable destinations for Snell, leaving the Yankees unfazed by the potential loss. Instead of lamenting, they see it as Snell’s decision not to join them. Boras’s insistence on $30 million annually led to this missed opportunity, shifting the focus away from the Yankees towards players like Clarke Schmidt. San Francisco and Los Angeles have also emerged as potential landing spots for Snell, with both teams having ample financial resources and avoiding the hefty tax burdens faced by New York.
