Chargers’ OC Greg Roman Emphasizes Need For Strong Running Game To Support Justin Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers plan to improve quarterback Justin Herbert’s performance in the upcoming season by focusing on enhancing their running game, as stated by offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Roman stressed the significance of maintaining consistency in running plays, believing it will elevate Herbert’s overall effectiveness during games.

During the previous season, the Chargers encountered difficulties with their running game, evident in their 5-12 record. They placed 24th in rushing yards and 26th in yards per carry. Roman views the enhancement of these statistics as vital for the team’s future success.

Despite Austin Ekeler offering a reliable presence in the backfield, his performance saw a decline last season, registering the lowest yards per carry of his career at 3.5. Improving Ekeler’s output will be a key focus for the Chargers in 2024.

Roman emphasized the importance of a potent running game in influencing opposing defenses, underscoring the disruption it can create for defensive coordinators. He conveyed assurance in their capacity to introduce a revamped running strategy that doesn’t solely hinge on designed runs for Herbert.
