New England Patriots are Named favorites To Take Intriguing QB With No. 3 Pick in 2024 NFL Draft

The New England Patriots stand out as one of the most intriguing teams to monitor in the upcoming NFL Draft. Holding the third overall pick, they possess the opportunity to select one of the top three quarterbacks available in the draft class. However, they also have the flexibility to opt for another talented player and address their quarterback needs through free agency.

With the third pick, the Patriots would potentially acquire the quarterback whom both the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders, selecting first and second respectively, have passed on. This presents them with a challenging dilemma, especially considering the presence of Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who is widely regarded as one of the premier talents in the draft class.

Despite the allure of Marvin Harrison Jr., ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates predicts that the New England Patriots will opt for a quarterback instead. Yates anticipates that Caleb Williams will be chosen as the first overall pick by the Bears, with Jayden Daniels following suit at number two to the Commanders. This scenario leaves the Patriots with the opportunity to select Drake Maye, the signal-caller from UNC Tar Heels, a decision Yates views as suitable for the team now led by Jerod Mayo.

Yates describes Maye as a 6-foot-4, 230-pound quarterback with the ideal physical attributes for an NFL passer. He highlights Maye’s accuracy, particularly when targeting the middle of the field, as well as his agility in the pocket, which allows him to extend plays. Additionally, Maye’s ability to contribute as a rusher, with 16 rushing touchdowns in the past two seasons, adds to his appeal.

Given the Patriots’ struggles last season, ranking 30th in yards per attempt (6.1) and 31st in Total QBR (31.6), Yates suggests that building the offense around Maye could be a strategic move as the team enters a new era under Jerod Mayo’s leadership.

What Will the New England Patriots Do With Their QB Situation?

The New England Patriots face a significant decision regarding their quarterback situation. While there’s the possibility of drafting Drake Maye, the team might prioritize acquiring a veteran quarterback to accelerate their rebuild in the post-Bill Belichick era.

Justin Fields has emerged as a potential target for the Patriots, with the option of using their third pick to trade for him from the Bears or another less desirable draft asset.

Furthermore, the upcoming offseason is expected to see several veteran quarterbacks, such as Russell Wilson, becoming available. If the Patriots aren’t fully convinced about the quarterback they could select at number three, they could opt to pursue a bridge quarterback in the free agent market and focus on securing the best available talent in the draft instead.

Ultimately, the Patriots will need to carefully evaluate their options leading up to the draft to make the best decision for their team’s future.
