Yankees reportedly confirm the signing of another MLB star

The initial day of Yankees camp in Tampa was eventful for two relievers the team obtained during the 2022 trade deadline, both right-handers recovering from Tommy John surgery. Scott Effross was placed on the 60-day injured list due to back surgery, expected to return later in the summer, while the Yankees decided to bring back Lou Trivino, who was seen at the training complex early Wednesday, hinting at his potential comeback for the 2024 season after being non-tendered by the team in November. During Aaron Boone’s initial spring training press conference, when queried about Trivino, the manager acknowledged that the Yankees were pondering a reunion but clarified that Trivino wasn’t currently under contract. Boone refrained from disclosing further specifics at that moment.

However, less than an hour later, Andy Martino of SNY revealed that the Yankees had indeed reached an agreement with Trivino. The exact timetable for the right-hander’s return remains uncertain since he underwent Tommy John surgery last May. However, there’s a possibility that he could make a significant contribution late in the season if his rehabilitation progresses smoothly without any setbacks. Trivino, acquired from the Athletics in the notable Frankie Montas trade, demonstrated promising performance with a 1.66 ERA across 25 appearances to conclude the 2022 season before missing the entirety of the following year due to injury. Effross’s absence is a setback for the Yankees, considering he appeared to be progressing towards a bullpen return this spring. Despite being over a year removed from elbow surgery, he suffered a setback when he injured his back in December. Although the sidearm reliever has resumed his throwing regimen, his road back to the major league mound will be gradual as he navigates recovery from both injuries.
