Alongside Jack Clarke… Another star ‘happy’ at Sunderland despite transfer interest

Pierre Ekwah netted his second goal in three matches as Sunderland secured a 3-1 victory against Plymouth Argyle over the weekend. The French player had previously scored against Stoke last month, marking an improvement in his performance since being granted more flexibility in midfield by Michael Beale.

Ekwah, who joined Sunderland in January 2023, initially impressed but faced a setback due to injury. However, he appears to be regaining his top form and has become a regular presence in midfield alongside Dan Neil.

Despite attracting attention during the summer transfer window, particularly from Crystal Palace, Fulham, and Nottingham Forest, Ekwah remained with Sunderland. Nevertheless, if the club fails to secure promotion this season, there could be increased pressure to retain their key players, including Ekwah, amid Premier League interest.

Despite receiving interest from other clubs, Ekwah has emphasized his contentment at the Stadium of Light, stating that he sees it as the ideal environment for his development as a young player.

When asked about whether Wearside is the best place for him, Ekwah told the Sunderland Echo, “Oh yeah, 100 per cent. Like I said the last time we spoke, I’m definitely happy here. For my development as a person and as a footballer it’s the perfect place. I’m really enjoying myself and you can see it out there that a lot of people are enjoying themselves, that’s for sure.”

Ekwah then discussed his relationship with Michael Beale and how the coach had encouraged him to play further forward on the pitch. “We were talking about my past and all this, about where I’ve been and things like that,” he said. “When the new gaffer came in he introduced himself and at the same time we introduced ourselves to him. Knowing the background of everyone I think is great and he’s done a great gesture and I appreciate that.”

Can we get the best out of Pierre Ekwah?

Pierre Ekwah has experienced ups and downs during his time at Sunderland, but his talent was undeniable before his injury earlier in the season. The former West Ham player has been steadily improving lately, and it’s evident that Michael Beale recognizes his strengths when he’s not confined to a defensive midfield role.

The partnership between Ekwah and Dan Neil has been outstanding, highlighting the positive impact they’ve had on the team’s ability to attack and create chances, which was a struggle in recent months.

With plenty of potential still to be realized, losing Ekwah this summer would be a significant blow. It’s unlikely that we would develop as rapidly if he were to move to the top flight immediately.
