Sunderland star reveals his key Sunderland ambition and sends message to fans after marking major milestone

Sunderland defender Luke O’Nien has been contemplating his recent significant milestone at the club. O’Nien expresses his determination to guide Sunderland back into the Premier League, assuring supporters that he’s fully committed to the cause.

Recently, O’Nien celebrated a notable achievement at Sunderland, marking his 250th appearance for the club. He joins a select group, comprising only John O’Shea and Lee Cattermole from this century, in reaching this milestone. Reflecting on his journey, O’Nien recalled his debut against Charlton Athletic, where he was substituted just 45 minutes in, highlighting the contrast between then and now. Despite facing numerous managerial changes and playing in various positions, O’Nien remains a consistent presence in the team. Speaking to club media, the 29-year-old expressed pride in his accomplishments at Sunderland but emphasized that his journey is far from over.

“I’ve achieved a lot of my goals, but there’s still a considerable journey ahead,” O’Nien shared with safc.com.

“My ultimate aim is to see Sunderland back in the Premier League, and I’m determined to accomplish that goal with this club. There’s a significant amount of work to be done between now and then, with our primary focus being promotion.

“Reaching 250 appearances feels somewhat surreal. I vividly recall my first game as if it were yesterday, so achieving this milestone is beyond anything I could have imagined as a child. I’m immensely proud of it. Many people have played a part in helping me reach this number, and I must give a special mention to my family, who have been unwavering supporters from the start.

“My journey here has been filled with highs and lows. From personal milestones like starting a family to the challenges on the pitch, each experience has contributed to my growth. Even the tough moments, like my short debut, have provided valuable lessons.

“At Sunderland, you learn quickly; the demand for success is immediate. The mix of good and bad experiences creates a compelling narrative—one that I’m incredibly proud of.

“Reflecting with my wife, who has been a tremendous support, I realize how much has happened since coming to the North East. From my daughter’s first steps on the pitch to the upcoming milestones with my son, it’s been a remarkable journey. I’m proud to have represented this club, not just once, but 250 times.

“I understand the privilege of wearing the shirt and the responsibility it carries. Every appearance is an opportunity to give my all, knowing that every fan in the stands would do the same. I may not always get it right, but I’m committed to working as hard as possible and giving my best in every game.

“I’m grateful for the incredible support from Sunderland fans since my arrival, and I’m determined to repay that support in the coming months and years.

“The relationship I’ve built with the fans means a lot to me. Despite some initial challenges, their unwavering support has been invaluable. It’s during tough times that one’s character shines through, and I’m proud of how I’ve responded.

“I’ve received backing and patience from many, and the best way I can show my gratitude is by consistently performing at my best and being a good teammate. Together, as a club, we strive to leave a positive legacy.

“I’m committed to this journey, and I’m proud to be part of Sunderland until 2026.”
