Arthur Smith, the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is anticipated to adapt his approach to suit the team’s roster and coaching staff. However, according to Alex Kozora of Steelers Depot, there’s speculation that the Steelers might pursue wide receiver Mack Hollins in free agency, whom Smith previously collaborated with in Atlanta.
Kozora, sharing his prediction on X (formerly Twitter), stated, “While free agency is still six weeks away, I’m making a prediction: WR Mack Hollins will join the Steelers. Having worked with Arthur Smith in Atlanta, he brings blocking prowess, vertical playmaking ability, special teams proficiency, and comes at a reasonable cost.”
Hollins, who played under Smith during the 2023 season with the Atlanta Falcons, recorded 18 receptions for 251 yards across 13 games.
Could the Pittsburgh Steelers Sign WR Mack Hollins?
The 30-year-old wide receiver has had a journey through the NFL since being drafted in the fourth round by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017.
Hollins spent the majority of three seasons in Philadelphia before joining the Miami Dolphins towards the end of the 2019 season. He then moved on to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022.
During his time with the Raiders, Hollins had a standout season as the team’s second receiver alongside Davante Adams. He tallied impressive numbers with 57 receptions for 690 yards and 4 touchdowns on 94 targets.
Following his strong performance, his 2023 season with only 18 catches was somewhat underwhelming. However, it’s noted that he wasn’t heavily utilized in Atlanta, averaging just 2.3 targets per game.
In Pittsburgh, Hollins is expected to have a similar role. With Arthur Smith likely emphasizing a strong running game, the Steelers may rely heavily on George Pickens, Diontae Johnson, and Pat Freiermuth in the passing attack. Any remaining targets could be directed towards slot receiver Calvin Austin III.
Despite potentially limited opportunities, Hollins could still be a valuable addition due to his familiarity with Smith’s offensive system. Additionally, he’s anticipated to come at a reasonable price, as projected by Spotrac at around $1.48 million for a one-year contract in the upcoming offseason.
Hollins Familiar With Arthur Smith’s Offense
Heading into the 2024 season, quarterback Kenny Pickett will technically be under the guidance of his third offensive coordinator in as many NFL seasons, even considering one was on an interim basis.
Transitioning to a new offensive scheme can pose challenges, particularly for young quarterbacks. Therefore, having Mack Hollins as a resource could prove invaluable, despite potential modest contributions in terms of statistics.
On the field, Hollins could effectively step into the shoes of veteran wide receiver Allen Robinson for the Steelers. It’s anticipated that the Steelers will release Robinson to free up $10 million in salary cap space. While Robinson’s 2023 performance was marked by just 34 receptions for 280 yards, his blocking skills were highly valued.
In Arthur Smith’s run-oriented offense, receivers adept at blocking are essential. Thus, signing Hollins to replace Robinson would align with the team’s strategy. Although Robinson boasts a more decorated career, Hollins has demonstrated greater productivity over the past couple of seasons and comes at a significantly lower cost for 2024. Additionally, Hollins brings special teams versatility, an area where Robinson lacks experience.
While the Steelers may not actively seek out former Falcons players or coaches to accommodate Smith’s arrival, Alex Kozora persuasively argues that Hollins stands out as the most logical addition from the Falcons’ roster for Pittsburgh in 2024.
