Charlton Athletic make decision to cut ties with summer recruit

Charlton Athletic has officially ended their association with the defender, who has returned to Italy. Abankwah, aged 20, made three appearances for the Addicks across various competitions in the first half of the season. The club has now confirmed the conclusion of his time at The Valley.

Charlton Athletic loan end

Abankwah’s move to Charlton didn’t unfold as planned, and his departure this winter benefits all parties involved. Arriving in London last summer to bolster the defensive lineup for the current campaign, he was brought in by former manager Dean Holden but struggled to secure a regular spot in the team.

During his time with the League One outfit, Abankwah witnessed the departure of two managers, including Michael Appleton earlier this month. Starting his career in Ireland with stints at Letterkenny Rovers, Melview, Cherry Orchard, and St Patrick’s Athletic, he moved to Udinese in 2021. Despite making two appearances for the Serie A side, Abankwah sought more playing time and was permitted to join Charlton to gain experience.

Now, his parent club faces a decision regarding his future for the remainder of the season. Abankwah departs Charlton, who have been active in the transfer market recently as they aim to climb up the table. With the search for a new manager ongoing after Appleton’s departure, the Addicks will assess their options. They resume league action this weekend with a home fixture against Derby County.
