‘He’s joining’: Sunderland now closing in on second January signing after Hjelde

“Sunderland is on the verge of securing their first two signings of the January transfer window. Initially poised to announce the arrival of Leeds United defender Leo Hjelde as their inaugural signing for the month, the club swiftly reached an agreement for another new addition. With a pressing need to strengthen their attacking lineup, Sunderland had been engaged in discussions regarding a potential move for Arsenal’s Charles Sagoe Jr. However, it appears they have shifted their focus away from the 19-year-old and are now pursuing Romaine Mundle from Standard Liege. Fabrizio Romano broke the news of this unexpected development earlier today, confirming Sunderland’s agreement for the permanent transfer of Mundle. The former Tottenham midfielder is set to make a return to England as he joins #SAFC.”

“Mundle appeared poised to join a Championship club earlier this month, with Stoke City, Plymouth, and Swansea vying for his signature. Nevertheless, it appears that Sunderland will be the ones to secure the 20-year-old winger on a permanent deal before tomorrow’s deadline.”

Who is Romaine Mundle?

London-born Romaine Mundle rose through the ranks of Tottenham Hotspur’s youth academy, securing his first professional contract in May 2021. Although he began training with the first team in the subsequent season and was even included in the match-day squad for Tottenham’s Europa League encounter with FC Pacos de Ferreira, Mundle did not make his senior debut. Instead, he excelled for the U21s during the previous season, tallying seven goals and five assists in 24 appearances in the PL2 Division 1.

Mundle’s potential caught the eye of manager Antonio Conte, earning him a place on the bench for five Premier League fixtures in the 2022/23 season before Spurs sought to extend his contract. Despite the club’s efforts, Mundle opted to depart his childhood club amidst interest from elsewhere, joining Belgian side Standard Liege on a four-year deal in the summer.

However, his opportunities in the Belgian Pro League have been scarce, as he has yet to start a game. Additionally, an ankle injury sidelined him for a period, and he was excluded from the match-day squad on nine occasions, featuring only six times as a substitute.

Now, just seven months later, Mundle appears poised to make a return to England, potentially aiding Sunderland in their quest for promotion back to the Premier League.
