Birmingham City ‘very close’ to landing ‘huge coup’ before transfer deadline

In the most recent Championship transfer updates, Birmingham City appears to be on the brink of securing a significant transfer from Sunderland. Reports suggest that Birmingham City is nearing the acquisition of midfielder Alex Pritchard from Sunderland, with a reported agreement on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

The 30-year-old’s future with the Black Cats has been uncertain for some time, reaching a critical point last week when he declined to participate in the match against Stoke City. Now, former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray has stepped in, presenting Pritchard with an opportunity to reunite with him and become part of the promising project taking shape at St Andrew’s Stadium.

According to Sunderland Nation reports, Pritchard is set to receive a substantial salary increase and has reached an agreement on contractual terms that will see him remain at Birmingham until June 2027. Allegedly, the only remaining step is for the two clubs to settle on compensation, with a reported figure of £100,000, considering Pritchard’s remaining six months on his contract at the Stadium of Light.

If the report holds true, Birmingham will secure a significant victory before the transfer window closes. Pritchard has been a pivotal figure for Sunderland since his arrival from Huddersfield Town in 2021. His tenure has been marked by success, including promotion to the Championship and subsequent qualification for the play-offs in the following season.

Having initially started his career at Tottenham Hotspur, Pritchard has amassed an impressive record of 48 goals and 66 assists across 359 appearances. While primarily occupying the role of a number 10, he possesses versatility that allows him to contribute effectively across midfield or even in attacking positions. As a former England Under-21 international, his potential addition is likely to bolster Birmingham’s prospects of climbing the league standings.
